Artist Profile

Farrell Brickhouse

b.1949 NYC / Lives and works in Staten Island / Skowhegan

painting, drawing

In their thick, layered impasto and rawness of execution, the paintings of Farrell Brickhouse might remind one of the British master Frank Auerbach, who similarly constructs his figures by a process of quasi-improvisation, and walks an ambiguous line between figuration and abstraction. Unlike anybody else's is Farrell's mytho-poetic menagerie of circus strongmen, airborne goddesses, two-legged rabbits, and diverse other fantastical quasi-anthropomorphic critters.

Collections: The San Diego Museum, Weatherspoon Gallery, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the William Benton Museum.
