Artist Profile

Joseph Nechvatal

b. 1951, Chicago, IL / based in Paris, France and New York, NY

computer generated art, painting

The intricate and interlaced patterns in Joseph Nechvatal’s paintings emerge by chance, generated by computer viruses, coding, and the artist's in-house algorithms. Referencing the AIDS virus, Nechvatal’s pioneering work is in conversation with several artists from the eighties and nineties who also referenced AIDS in their work through viral motifs.

Joseph's use of technology to create random, unforeseen abstract works also recalls sixties conceptual art strategies in which a predetermined idea gives the work form. Nechvatal updates these themes and processes for an age in the throes of previously unknown risks and threats in the cyber and virtual realm.
